Understanding What Love and Loving IS NOT
When we discuss love, it is often enveloped in warmth, affection, and positivity. However, understanding what love isn't can be just as crucial in forming healthy relationships. This knowledge helps us avoid misconceptions and harmful dynamics. Let's explore some common misunderstandings about love.
Love IS NOT Possession
Love does not mean possessing or controlling another person. True love allows individuals to retain their independence and freedom. When one person tries to control or dominate the other, it leads to an unhealthy relationship dynamic. Love should foster growth, not restriction.
Love IS NOT Conditional
Genuine love is not based on fulfilling certain conditions or expectations. Conditional love might appear as affection that is withdrawn if the other person doesn't meet specific standards. This form of "love" can create anxiety and insecurity. Real love accepts and embraces imperfections that are seeking to become a greater more mature version of oneself, for self first and foremost.
Love IS NOT Just a Feeling
While emotions are a significant part of love, it's not just about feelings. Love entails commitment, effort, and action. It involves being there for someone through both good and challenging times. Relying solely on emotions can lead to instability, as feelings can fluctuate. And they truly do feelings do not always stay the same depending on us and our moods swings as well as on how we chose to or have learned to, or have matured enough to wisely understand that we can be emotionally unstable people, some worse than others. But none of this is an accepted excuse for terrible evil intentional angry bitter unforgiving revengeful behavior.
Love IS NOT Selfish
True love is selfless rather than self-centered. It involves considering the needs, desires, and happiness of the other person. Love IS NOT about what you can get but what you can give. A relationship based solely on self-interest can become toxic, traumatic, very draining and very unfulfilling.
Love IS NOT Always Easy
Love doesn't mean there will never be challenges or disagreements. It IS NOT a constant state of bliss, but love just like life is whatever we make it become in and for our lives as well as for the lives of others God wants us to genuinely show love to, no matter who what when where why and how. Real love involves working through difficulties, understanding differing perspectives, and continuously supporting each other. It's about growth and resilience and not take aways from the positive bringing drama and foolishness over making everything negative.
Love IS NOT Obsession
Obsessive behavior is often mistaken for love. However, obsession can lead to unhealthy attachments and suffocating relationships. Love respects boundaries and personal space. It doesn't entail constant monitoring or overwhelming attention. You learn to greatly respect and honor one another living intentionally unselfishly.
Love IS NOT Blind
The phrase "love is blind" suggests overlooking flaws, but true love recognizes and accepts both strengths and weaknesses. It involves seeing the full picture and choosing to love anyway. Denying or ignoring issues can lead to unresolved conflicts and resentment.
Understanding what love IS NOT helps us identify and nurture healthy, fulfilling relationships. By recognizing these misconceptions, we can create bonds that are supportive, respectful, honorable and enduring.
