Paul's Thorn in the Flesh: New Clues for an Old Problem

2 Corinthians 12     The Message

Pauls Vision and His Thorn

Strength from Weakness

12 1-5 You’ve forced me to talk this way, and I do it against my better judgment. But now that we’re at it, I may as well bring up the matter of visions and revelations that God gave me. For instance, I know a man who, fourteen years ago, was seized by Christ and swept in ecstasy to the heights of heaven. I really don’t know if this took place in the body or out of it; only God knows. I also know that this man was hijacked into paradise—again, whether in or out of the body, I don’t know; God knows. There he heard the unspeakable spoken, but was forbidden to tell what he heard. This is the man I want to talk about. But about myself, I’m not saying another word apart from the humiliations.

If I had a mind to brag a little, I could probably do it without looking ridiculous, and I’d still be speaking plain truth all the way. But I’ll spare you. I don’t want anyone imagining me as anything other than the fool you’d encounter if you saw me on the street or heard me talk.

7-10 Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn’t get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn’t think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me,

My grace is enough; it’s all you need.
My strength comes into its own in your weakness.

Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.

11-13 Well, now I’ve done it! I’ve made a complete fool of myself by going on like this. But it’s not all my fault; you put me up to it. You should have been doing this for me, sticking up for me and commending me instead of making me do it for myself. You know from personal experience that even if I’m a nobody, a nothing, I wasn’t second-rate compared to those big-shot apostles you’re so taken with. All the signs that mark a true apostle were in evidence while I was with you through both good times and bad: signs of portent, signs of wonder, signs of power. Did you get less of me or of God than any of the other churches? The only thing you got less of was less responsibility for my upkeep. Well, I’m sorry. Forgive me for depriving you.

14-15 Everything is in readiness now for this, my third visit to you. But don’t worry about it; you won’t have to put yourselves out. I’ll be no more of a bother to you this time than on the other visits. I have no interest in what you have—only in you. Children shouldn’t have to look out for their parents; parents look out for the children. I’d be most happy to empty my pockets, even mortgage my life, for your good. So how does it happen that the more I love you, the less I’m loved?

16-18 And why is it that I keep coming across these whiffs of gossip about how my self-support was a front behind which I worked an elaborate scam? Where’s the evidence? Did I cheat or trick you through anyone I sent? I asked Titus to visit, and sent some brothers along. Did they swindle you out of anything? And haven’t we always been just as aboveboard, just as honest?

19 I hope you don’t think that all along we’ve been making our defense before you, the jury. You’re not the jury; God is the jury—God revealed in Christ—and we make our case before him. And we’ve gone to all the trouble of supporting ourselves so that we won’t be in the way or get in the way of your growing up.

20-21 I do admit that I have fears that when I come you’ll disappoint me and I’ll disappoint you, and in frustration with each other everything will fall to pieces—quarrels, jealousy, flaring tempers, taking sides, angry words, vicious rumors, swelled heads, and general bedlam. I don’t look forward to a second humiliation by God among you, compounded by hot tears over that crowd that keeps sinning over and over in the same old ways, who refuse to turn away from the pigsty of evil, sexual disorder, and indecency in which they wallow.

****(Please Read this version as well, whenever you get the chance during your freely chosen devotional time spent in the word):

(The New International Version)

"Thorn in the flesh" is a biblical phrase, primarily found in 2 Corinthians 12:7, referring to a persistent and irritating affliction. Paul uses it to describe a difficulty he experienced, likely a messenger of Satan, to keep him humble and prevent pride from the revelations he received. The exact nature of the thorn is not explicitly stated, leading to various wondering curious mindsets that also led to many assumptions and interpretations.

Elaboration:
Biblical Context:
The phrase is found in 2 Corinthians 12:7, where Paul writes, "To keep me from becoming conceited, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited".

Interpretation:
The thorn is interpreted as an annoying persistent maybe even noticebly visable issue that Paul couldn't hide from others or that he didn't want to or chose not to hide, possibly a physical ailment, spiritual hardship, or even a person causing trouble, that served to keep Paul grounded and humble.

*** (Martha Woodens revelation theory, her thesis, her understanding of this) It could have been excrutiating pain afflicted somewhere inside or visible scar (left behind afflicted residue) on the surface of his physical body that may have caused some excrutiating pain, for some of the reasons he stated- there being a thorn in his flesh.  A thorn is sharp and if pierced or if whenever it touches or makes it's contact with the flesh, a sharp pain can be should be and will be felt, depending upon it's strengthened impact level.  So let us try to maybe imagine an ongoing never ending strongly impactful contact with a thorn in or to your flesh, creating a severe enough, not minor, ongoing discomfort.  Paul was a true obedient servant of God and was endowed with God's wisdom and revelation.  He was holy spirit filled had biblical truths and was a scholar of it all.  I do not believe that it was a temptational sin struggle.  I never truly believed that, it never made sense for me to believe that.  He does not state exactly what the thorn in his flesh was, but he provides enough information for us to understand a few things about this serious annoying tormenting issue that he asked God to remove, several times.  And not that it is an actual visible thorn object, literally.  We all are aware that whatever it was, Paul accepted it.  He actually was given no other choice but to either accept it or not, but was encouraged or should I say commanded to move focused and righteously onward in God while having to well put up with it, well cope with it, well manage it and well deal with it.  Instead he must Push through it, wisely living with it learning to ignore it's ongoing felt existence or it's ongoing felt or even visibly seen irritating tormenting presence.

God knows each of us and He knows us in exact and is completely aware of how to, in and with His wisdom, well deal well handle and well manage each of us according to our truest nature at the core of our being.  He knows how to help keep us humble and grounded if and whenever needed, so that we don't allow our selfish fleshly ways to rise up in us and show outward bringing interferences and hindrances to His urgently planned agenda, his urgent assignments he has for us to urgently get started on, to continue in on and with and to complete until the assignments given are effectively well performed well accomplished and well finished.  Even when we are entrusted to carry His Holy Spirit, His Power His Anointing and His Wisdom Endowed Truths, all while Humbly walking with Authority and Dominion, operating in our God Given Appointed Called Chosen Ordained God Led Assignments.   God is God Almighty, All Powerful All Knowing, All Seeing, the one and only true living supreme ruler God of this universe.  He rules and He reigns supreme over everything and over everyone with no apology.

A thorn is a:
  • a stiff, sharp-pointed, straight or curved woody projection on the stem or other part of a plant.
  • 2.a thorny bush, shrub, or tree, especially a hawthorn.

And isn't this the same Paul:  Yes, the Apostle Paul who wrote the New Testament letters, who was responsible for writing several letters throughout the New Testament.  And Saul before his name changed to Paul who persecuted Christians before his conversion are the same person. The New Testament book of Acts describes how Saul (later known as Paul) actively persecuted early Christians, and Paul himself acknowledges this in his letters:

The following is a breakdown of the letters Paul wrote and the possible timeframes in which he wrote them, if close to the time frame accuracy:

Galatians (AD 47)
1 and 2 Thessalonians (AD 49—51)
1 and 2 Corinthians and Romans (AD 52—56)
Ephesians, Philemon, Colossians, and Philippians (AD 60—62, during Paul’s first Roman imprisonment)
1 Timothy and Titus (AD 62)
2 Timothy (AD 63—64, during Paul’s second Roman imprisonment)

  • Saul of Tarsus (Paul):
Initially a persecutor of Christians, Saul of Tarsus had a life-altering conversion experience on the road to Damascus. He later became one of the most influential figures in early Christianity, known for his writings (the Epistles) and missionary work.
The disciple who never met Jesus in his earthly life was Paul (originally known as Saul). While he became a prominent apostle after a conversion experience, he didn't walk with Jesus during his ministry.
A disciple is a follower of Jesus, while an apostle is a special kind of disciple chosen by Jesus to spread the gospel and build the church. All apostles are disciples, but not all disciples are apostles.

(Now let us get back to this.  Here is More to read below):

Purpose:
Paul believed the thorn was intended to prevent him from becoming proud or self-reliant due to his spiritual gifts and well understood wise revelations from God.

Various Interpretations:
The nature of the thorn has been debated, with some suggesting it was a physical ailment (like epilepsy or eye problems), a spiritual struggle, or even a specific individual or annoying circumstance.

Modern Use:
The phrase "thorn in the flesh" is now used in a metaphorical sense to describe any persistent annoyance, problem, severe pain which caused some difficulty by also causing real intentional ongoing confusion disruptions or inconvenient complications in someone's life.
